As the positive impact of Supporter Liaison Officers (SLOs) grows and continues to be felt across European football, UEFA, European Club Association (ECA), and Football Supporters Europe (FSE) hosted the second UCC SLO Workshop at UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon on 3-4 February 2025.
The event brought together SLOs from the seventy-two clubs who have progressed to the next stage of UEFA’s three men’s club competitions to exchange new and established best practices, strengthen collaboration and connections, and enhance matchday operations for the remainder of the season.
The workshop opened with welcome speeches from key representatives of UEFA, ECA, and FSE, before delving into discussions on the fundamental aspects of the role of SLOs in matchday operations and away travel preparation. Key topics included the management and challenges involved with fan materials, effective cooperation between SLOs and stakeholders, along with a focus on service levels in away sectors of stadiums and how recurring issues are managed by UEFA.
Attendees heard repeatedly about the importance of honest and ongoing communication not only between SLOs but all stakeholders, particularly during a session to outline the exchange of information between SLOs and match officials such as UEFA Delegates, Venue Directors, and Security Officers.
Further examples and case studies throughout the two days provided insights into the practical challenges faced by SLOs, including preparatory visits, mandatory transport management, travel bans, and handling matchday incidents.
In addition, a series of breakout sessions first allowed SLOs to meet and network with counterparts, specifically those playing each other in the coming weeks, before participants assessed different scenarios and identified solutions that could be implemented within their clubs.
The event concluded with a review of key takeaways from all involved during an interactive feedback session, reinforcing the importance of investing in the development and training of SLOs to create a more seamless experience for fans.
Julien Zylberstein, Managing Director, European Affairs and Governance, UEFA said: “At UEFA, we understand the pivotal role Supporter Liaison Officers play in enhancing the matchday experience and fostering positive relationships between clubs, supporters, and all stakeholders in European football. The continued success of the SLO programme highlights the power of collaboration, best practice sharing, and ongoing development. This workshop is a vital step in strengthening these connections and ensuring that supporters are at the heart of everything we do, on and off the pitch.
Ronan Evain, Executive Director at FSE, said: “Following the success of last season’s inaugural UCC SLO Workshop, we’re delighted to continue this collaboration with UEFA and ECA for another edition ahead of this year’s UCC knockout phase. From our continuing work with SLOs, we know that opportunities like this are invaluable for learning, sharing experiences, and building connections—all of which contribute to a safe, secure, and welcoming environment for all supporters.”
Diederik Dewaele, Director of Football at ECA, added: “SLOs are integral to the matchday experience, acting as the bridge between clubs and their supporters. ECA remains committed to supporting clubs by fostering collaboration, sharing best practices, and working closely with UEFA and FSE to enhance the role of SLOs in European football.”
The second UCC SLO Workshop further reaffirmed the shared commitment of UEFA, ECA and FSE to improving the matchday experience for all stakeholders, ensuring the continued development of SLOs as a fundamental part of European football’s structure.
